NIT Calicut PhD Admission 2023-24: National Institute of Technology, Calicut is an Institute for National Importance, invites application for admission to PhD programmes with institute fellowship in various departments for academic session 2023-24 July semester I.

Schemes under PhD admission available at NIT Calicut

Scheme I: Full-time registration with Institute Fellowship or other Govt. Fellowships like CSIR-UGC –

Scheme II: Full-time registration under the Self-Sponsored category

Scheme III: Full-time registration for candidates sponsored from Industry or other organizations including Educational Institutions

Scheme IV: Internal Registration for regular staff employed at NITC/ Research staff employed in funded projects at NITC

Scheme V: External (Part-time) Registration for candidates, from Industry or other organizations including Educational Institutions, who possess a post graduate degree

Scheme VI: External (Part-time) Registration to Direct PhD programme for candidates working in Industry/R&D Labs/Medical Institutions who do not have a post graduate degree but have relevant experience in reputed Industry/R&D Labs/Medical Institutions.

Financial Assistance

Half time Research Assistantship (HTRA) is available for a few full-time research scholars who are not receiving any financial support/ scholarship from other Agencies or State or Central Governments, subject to the availability as stipulated by Ministry of Education (MoE), Govt. of India (GoI).

Eligibility Criteria for NIT Calicut PhD Admission

Faculty of Engineering:

The candidates applying for admission to Ph.D. Programmes in Engineering departments at NITC must have passed M.E./M. Tech. Degree in the appropriate branch of study with minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.0/10)[For SC/ST/PWD candidates, the minimum mark is 55% (CGPA 5.5/10)]. Candidates are also required to have passed B.E./B. Tech. Degree in an appropriate branch with minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.0/10)in the qualifying examination. [For SC/ST/PWD candidates the minimum percentage of marks is 55% (CGPA 5.5/10)]. Candidates who secured B. Tech./BE degree under lateral entry should have passed the three-year diploma in engineering with minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.0/10) [For SC/ST/PWD candidates 55% marks (CGPA 5.5/10)]. Holders of AMIE (approved by AICTE) / other nationally approved programmes equivalent to B. Tech / B.E. in an appropriate area of study, may also be considered eligible.

An additional criterion of GATE score (obtained at some point of time in the past) in the respective disciplines or fellowships such as JRF/UGC/NET/CSIR/KSCSTE etc. or qualification in any other national level tests as specified by the GoI order is also mandatory to apply for admission under scheme I.

Department of Architecture and Planning:

Master’s degree in Architecture/Design/Planning/Engineering/Technology or in any other relevant disciplines (such as in Geography, Sociology, Economics, Disaster management etc.) related to major areas of research available in the department with minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.0/10) [For SC/ST/PWD candidates, the minimum mark is 55% (CGPA 5.5/10)]. Candidates are also required to have passed the relevant undergraduate degree with minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.0/10)in the qualifying examination[For SC/ST/PWD candidates the minimum mark is 55% (CGPA 5.5/10)]. Candidates who secured B. Arch/ B. Plan./ B. Tech. degree under lateral entry should have passed the three-year diploma in engineering with minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.0/10) [For SC/ST/PWD candidates 55% marks (CGPA 5.5/10)]. School of Materials Science and Engineering:

M.E./M. Tech./MS Degree in the appropriate branch of study /Nanoscience and Technology with minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.0/10) [For SC/ST/PWD candidates, the minimum mark is 55% (CGPA 5.5/10)]. An additional criterion of GATE score (obtained at some point of time in the past) in the respective discipline or fellowships such as JRF/UGC/NET/CSIR/KSCSTE etc. or
qualification in any other national level tests as specified by the GoI order* is also mandatory for candidates applying under scheme I.

OR

Master’s degree in Chemistry/Physics/Life science/Nanoscience and Technology/ any other
relevant disciplines related to major areas of research available in the department with minimum 60 % marks (CGPA 6.0/10) or equivalent, [for SC/ST/PWD candidates, the minimum mark is 55% (CGPA 5.5/10)]. A valid GATE score or UGC/CSIR/NBHM/NET/KSCSTE fellowship in the relevant area, tenable from the current year is also mandatory for candidates applying under scheme I.

OR

A master’s degree in Medicine/Surgery with a Bachelor’s degree in MBBS/BDS/Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery/Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery/ Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery/ Bachelor of Naturopathy & Yoga/ Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery with minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.0/10), [For SC/ST/PWD candidates, the minimum mark is 55% (CGPA 5.5/10)]. For applying under scheme I, A master’s degree in Medicine with a Bachelor’s degree in MBBS/BDS/Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery/Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery/ Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery/ Bachelor of Naturopathy & Yoga/ Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery should have qualified in any national level examination for their PG programme and they are exempted from GATE score and other fellowships such as NET-UGC/ CSIR/ NBHM/ KSCSTE/ INSPIRE/ DBT.

OR

A Master’s degree in Veterinary Medicine/Agriculture with minimum 60 % marks (CGPA 6.0/10), [For SC/ST/PWD candidates, the minimum mark is 55% (CGPA 5.5/10)]. For applying under scheme I, candidates with Master’s degree in Veterinary Medicine/Agriculture should have qualified in any national level examination for their PG programme and they are exempted from GATE score and other fellowships such as NET-UGC/ CSIR/ NBHM/ KSCSTE/ INSPIRE/ DBT.

Candidates applying under schemes II-VI do not require additional eligibility criteria such as GATE score or UGC/CSIR/NBHM/NET/KSCSTE fellowship.

Apart from this, the candidates should possess minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.0/10) or equivalent in their Bachelor’s degree as well [For SC/ST/PWD candidates, the minimum requirement is 55% marks (CGPA 5.5/10)].

School of Management Studies:

Candidates should possess minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.0/10) or equivalent both in Bachelors and Master’s degrees in a relevant area from an Institution recognized by UGC/AICTE [For SC/ST/PWD candidates, the minimum requirement is 55% mark (CGPA 5.5/10) or equivalent both in Bachelors and Masters degrees]. Candidates shall be required to have passed both the bachelors and Master’s degrees in regular full-time mode. In addition, the candidates should have a valid GATE score or UGC/NET/CSIR/JRF fellowship in the relevant areas tenable from the current year to apply under scheme I. For candidates who have master’s degree in engineering and technology, an additional criterion of GATE score (obtained at some point of time in the past) in the respective disciplines or fellowships such as JRF/UGC/NET/CSIR//KSCSTE etc. or qualification in any other national level tests as specified by the GoI order* is mandatory to apply under scheme I.

Department of Chemistry/Physics/Mathematics:

Master’s degree in an appropriate subject of Mathematics/Statistics/Chemistry/Physics/ Life
Sciences/ Electronics/Computer Science and Applications/ Nano Science and Technology/ Material Science/ Photonics with minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.0/10) or equivalent [For SC/ST/PWD candidates, the minimum mark is 55% (CGPA 5.5/10)]. A valid NET/GATE score or
UGC/CSIR/NBHM/NET/JEST/KSCSTE or any other National fellowship in the relevant areas tenable from the current year, is also mandatory for candidates applying under scheme I.

OR

M.E./M. Tech. Degree in the appropriate branch of study in relevant disciplines related to the major areas of research available in these departments with minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.0/10) [For SC/ST/PWD candidates, the minimum mark is 55% (CGPA 5.5/10)]. An additional criterion of GATE score (obtained at some point of time in the past) in the respective disciplines or fellowships such as JRF/UGC/NET/CSIR/KSCSTE etc. or qualification in any other national level tests as specified by the GoI order* is also mandatory for candidates applying under scheme I.

School of Biotechnology:

A Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Pharmacy with minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.0/10) [For SC/ST/PWD candidates, the minimum mark is 55% (CGPA 5.5/10)]. An additional criterion of GATE/GPAT score (obtained at some point of time in the past) in the respective discipline or fellowships such as JRF/UGC/NET/CSIR/KSCSTE etc. or qualification in any other national level tests as specified by the GoI order* is also mandatory for candidates applying under scheme I.

OR

A Master’s degree in any discipline in Science with minimum 60 % marks (CGPA 6.0/10) or
equivalent, [For SC/ST/PWD candidates, the minimum mark is 55% (CGPA 5.5/10)]. A valid GATE score or fellowships such as NET-UGC/CSIR/NBHM/KSCSTE/INSPIRE/DBT in the relevant area, tenable from the current year is also mandatory for candidates applying under scheme I.

OR

A master’s degree in Medicine/Surgery with a Bachelor’s degree in MBBS/BDS/Bachelor of
Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery/Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery/ Bachelor of
Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery/ Bachelor of Naturopathy & Yoga/ Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery with minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.0/10), [For SC/ST/PWD candidates, the minimum mark is 55% (CGPA 5.5/10)]. For applying under scheme I, the candidates should have a master’s degree in Medicine with a Bachelor’s degree in MBBS/BDS/Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery/Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery/ Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery/ Bachelor of Naturopathy & Yoga/ Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery. If such candidates have qualified any national level examination for their PG programme, they are exempted from GATE score and other fellowships such as NET-UGC/ CSIR/ NBHM/ KSCSTE/ INSPIRE/ DBT.

OR

Application Fee:  Application fee details are as follows: Rs. 1,000/- for OPEN/EWS/OBC/PwD candidates and Rs. 500/- for SC/ST candidates.
